Detailed review of the Toyota C-HR 2.0 Hybrid: a crossover with a hint of “coupe”, which received a new hybrid system in order to become more powerful and dynamic. How many contradictions, right? Well, it’s time to measure acceleration and calculate the consumption, discuss configurations and prices, mark competitors. And, finally, to answer the title question: can this crossover be considered the most original, unusual, exciting car of today in the Ukrainian Toyota model range?
The compact crossover Toyota C-HR debuted in 2016, and then the manufacturer said that the name of the C-HR model stands for Coupe High Rider – they say “coupe, only with a high body position.” The design style of the novelty really came out quite dynamic, youthful, bold. So much so that this fuse was enough even before the planned update of the model: in 2019, the appearance and interior were changed only in small things. But the update gave us an important technical change: a new powerful hybrid version!
The Toyota C-HR crossover still exists in the first and only generation, the model has recently undergone a scheduled update – and received a powerful 184-horsepower hybrid version. It was this car that became the hero of this material.
Rides soft! Moreover, this is not the softness that is “rolling”, but that softness that is “accuracy”: the Toyota C-HR 2.0 Hybrid crossover is able to smoothly and clearly move over all the bumps in the roads – that there are separate pits, that there are bumps / swells of asphalt, that small ripples on road. At the same time, there is a minimum of vibrations for the driver and passengers in the cabin, there are no extraneous suspension sounds, and the soft suspension tuning did not lead to body buildup or excessive rolls (here, it seems, one should say “thank you” to the low altitude). Although comfort used to be in the nature of the C-HR. But now there is also a compelling dynamic: the new hybrid is strong. Starting from a standstill is surprisingly easy, there is not even a shadow of a hitch in accelerating on the go, which upsets most modern cars tuned for the sake of the environment. To the mixed sounds of the g-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-d of an electric motor and the rustle of an intermittently switched on internal combustion engine, the Toyota C-HR crossover picks up speed briskly. Moreover, if you find the “Sport” mode in the on-board computer settings, then a rather sharp accelerator pedal setting, as well as a slightly heavier steering wheel, will be added to the convincing dynamics of the Toyota C-HR 2.0 Hybrid hybrid. That’s what Toyota C-HR 2.0 Hybrid is: a mixture of comfort and dynamics. https://cars45.com.gh/listing/toyota/land_cruiser/2013
The updated Toyota C-HR crossover is recognizable by the front bumper, new headlights and lanterns, and modified rims. And version 2.0 Hybrid also has chrome trim on the rear bumper. The new hybrid system sets a new level of dynamics: the declared passport 8.2 seconds are confirmed by real measurement – even on winter tires and in far from the best road conditions. True, I would like more silence during acceleration in extreme conditions and when driving at high speed. The transmission lever has an S-mode – but not from the word “Sport”, but from the word “Sequential”: they say, a choice of six virtual gears in the e-CVT electromechanical variator. The real “sport” mode is hidden in the bowels of the on-board computer: let the new Toyota C-HR 2.0 Hybrid not turn into a “race”, but already invigorates.
As well as with the comfort of the suspension, the overall situation with the interior has not changed. In the pros – high quality finishing materials and attention to detail: the soft front panel looks cool and summed up with a contrasting line, the “climate” unit pleases with silver keys, the seats and steering wheel are trimmed with pleasant leather. But also with the past pluses, the past minuses remained: the interior itself is small, and the dark ceiling hides the feeling of spaciousness even more. This is especially noticeable for rear passengers, where small windows with a dashing “designer” rise in the window sill line cut off the flow of light. Yes, the landing is low. You see, not to say that it’s already completely crowded – teenagers or people of average height will sit down without problems. The question is in psychology and emotional perception. Partially, this issue can be corrected by the Active package, where a light ceiling is available for selection.
But the trunk is small both at a glance and according to the stated official volume figures: 290 liters with a standard 5-seater saloon and 833 liters with the rear seats folded down. Fortunately, at least it is well organized: a large loading opening (although the threshold is high), the correct rectangular shape, an underground with an organizer, niches for small things and hooks for packages.
The salon as a whole is familiar – comfortable front seats, pleasant finishing materials, attention to detail. Although not everywhere: near the steering wheel you can find hard plastic and simple buttons, and the center console is literally “filled” with gloss, which quickly becomes dirty. The main change of the updated car is the new multimedia system Toyota Touch 2 (I will tell below). The back seat is plenty for people of average build, although visually and psychologically the interior is perceived closer than it actually is. The trunk is thought out, but small: only 290 liters.
How to describe the Toyota C-HR crossover in an updated version? It’s simple: we take the first review of the Toyota C-HR model and add a report about the new product. So, the Toyota C-HR crossover is still built on the TNGA architecture, equipped with gasoline engines or hybrids (again based on a gasoline engine), in most cases the drive is front-wheel drive (only the version with a 1.2-liter gasoline turbo engine). By the way, hybrids are also lower than a conventional gasoline crossover: if the latter has a clearance of 154 mm, then hybrids have only 142 mm – like a C-class hatchback. But if we say “hatchback”, then it’s obviously not easy, but “warmed up”. Since the test car offers a combined output of 184 hp: thanks to the 2-litre M20A-FXS petrol engine (152 hp, 190 Nm) and the 3NM electric motor (109 hp, 202 Nm), which sum up their efforts in e-CVT hybrid transmission based on a planetary gear. Interestingly, there is no reverse gear in the transmission – the reverse movement is realized simply by rotating the rotor of the electric motor in the opposite direction. And if at this time you hear the sound of the internal combustion engine, it is only because the gasoline engine turned on to recharge the traction battery. By the way, due to the fact that the maximum power of a gasoline engine and an electric motor are achieved at different speeds, it is simply impossible to sum up their power directly. That is why the “152 hp” rule does not apply. 109 hp”, and the total power should be indicated separately – 184 “horses” (with
simultaneous operation of the internal combustion engine and electric motor).
